Train to Soller
Not quite Thomas the Tank Engine, but a great way to entertain the little ones and enjoy the beautiful countryside of Mallorca at the same time. The train to Soller is a great day out for all the family and evokes memories of times gone by. The carriages are all early 20th century and its a wonderful experience for children to enjoy, especially going through the tunnel.
At the beginning of the 20th century the town of Sóller, with its booming industry and famous orange groves was very isolated and the only way to get to the captial at that time was by stage coach which needed to across the high Alfabia mountain range which was only a dirt track and also not the safest option.
So it was decided that a train line was needed to be built between Palma and Soller, the only main issue standing in the way was the large Alfabia Mountain range. They couldn't go over it so they had to go through it and they embarked on tunnelling through the mountian.
On the 19th August 1911 they broke through and the line was then officially opened in 16th April 1912.
